Lots of Portuguese pilgrims to Fatima and some to Santiago de Compostela. We notice it because we have more pilgrims staying and there were already two that just knocked on the door, without reserving. We didn’t have that this year.

Young Irish Future Specialist

It is a colder day, 23 degrees, with a lot of wind, so we didn’t sit outside for lunch. Then a Irish young man stops, he thought it was very hot, and asks if he could sleep here.
“Yes, we have four beds and there is nobody” I replied. It is not often they are all beds are taken.
He immediately puts his shoes off, they hurt. He was very ‘hot’, and he thought he thought he had something like a heat stroke. He walked very fast and may be it was all too much. He went to bed to recover. It was our swimming day and when we came back for dinner, he was good again!
He told us he was also a competition swimmer, like Cinta, and had he been fit he would have loved to see the swimming pool and the way they do things here in Portugal. He still called himself a student and then Cinta asked how old he was; 31 years.
He really liked all the healthy food on the table so he made a photo for his colleague who had a night shift and doing nothing he explained… Then we found out that he was working in the hospital already too, but learning to be specialist.

Lithuanian and Slovenian

Two pilgrims eat at our table. They have difficult names to pronounce. We had Moussaka, the national dish of Greece and big bowl of salad and soup. They were so full that they skipped the fruits afterwards. According to the Slovenian that spoke English, he ate less during the caminho. The first three days he ate more, and now not so much. I think doing the caminho is helping a lot to be healthy and also to lose some weight if you like to. The man from Lithuania spoke Russian, Polish and his own language, but unfortunately no English. It was hard for us to understand each other. He said he learns more and more during the caminho. So the caminho is good for being healthier, and also for learning English. At least if you are not Portuguese or Spanish, then you just speak in your own language!

Chen and Jorge to Fatima

Chen called us to ask if he could sleep at ours. Jaap-Willem asked him of he was Chinese.
“No, I am Portuguese, he answered”. He walked from Porto back to Lisbon where he lives. He heard from pilgrims that it is so different to walk in the opposite direction. So that is what he did.
He listens very good to what he hears on his caminho. Two pilgrims who walked towards Santiago talked with him and they said he had to come to us! So that was very nice. Jaap-Willem was worried that he and the other German pilgrim who stayed with us, couldn’t understand each other. It happened that he understood German too, he learned it at school! And what a coincidence, the German man, Jorge walked 5 minutes behind him, and also heading to Fatima.
Jorge booked all already, and when we told it is busy in Fatima in October he was happy that he did, because he had no clue. The rates were still normal, and not 300 euro for that one, two, or three nights around 12 October. He will have nice vibes of all pilgrims that arrived in Fatima already!

Fatima too Commercial?

The Slovenian went to Fatima too on his way to us. Lisbon-Santarem-Fatima-Tomar-Cortica-Casa da Lima! I have to tell that it is not the best caminho from Lisbon to Fatima, and I read that people fled afterwards to go to Porto because the experience on this dangerous road was not good at all. Nobody knows that it is better is to go to Coimbra first and then walk via a special path only crossing nature. This one is called the Route Carmelita, named because one of the shepherd children went to the Carmelite convent in Coimbra and died there a couple of years ago.

Our pilgrim didn’t like it because all was too commercial. Everywhere shops and stalls to sell Maria-things and other religious stuff. Well I answered that I didn’t feel it that way. Yes there are lots of vendors, and even more so in the little village of the sheperd-children. I don’t even see these. I go to the houses of the children, to the Fatima square, and back to the hotel or car. There are candlelight processions and on the square the only thing you could buy are candles. When it is finished I go to the place where I sleep, so I don’t really pay attention to all shops. My family from Indonesia went to Fatima too and my aunt bought a lot of religious things for her friends back home, so for me, it is good that there are shops to buy Fatima-things.

The Berlin Wall Monument in Fatima

One thing almost nobody knows is that there is a large piece of the Berlin wall behind glass, when you leave the square at the entrance opposite of the Sanctuary. I always have a look when all is finished and it is busy with people who like to leave at the same time. But it is certainly a nice opportunity for those who never visited Berlin or the Berlin wall.

The Fatima pilgrimage starts again.
